Considered (by most) to be the best municipal course in Wisconsin, we found absolutely no ground on which to make an alternative case.
From the road, Washington County Golf Course isn't as awe inspiring as it is from each tee. As you stand on the first tee, make a slow 360 degree turn and take it all in; the postcard farms, the fields of gold and brown, the green perfect fairways, waving fescue and rolling hills, the fresh unadulterated air of the country. Forget California, happy cows have to come from here.
Ask course supervisor, John Statz, to name his favorite hole and he'll laugh. He's right. He shouldn't have to pick one. We couldn't either, although #7 made a compelling case. His excellent attentive staff was equally non-committal. One of them equated the question to being asked to pick your favorite kid. When you hit the smooth fairways here your ball rolls and rolls. When you land in the rough, it's an easy out. When your ball heads towards the bunkers, the rakes move out of the way, unless you don't want them to. When you land in the water, the ducks give you your ball back. Yes, it's just about that friendly. But fescue is still fescue.
We're not saying it's easy. But it's also not hard. It's neither and both. The course designer here deserves an award. And God deserves a pat on the back for the surrounding beauty. Hole #1 is a brilliant confidence booster from junior to grandma. Five will taunt you. (Don't do it.) And then there's the splendid 7th. Three choice words for your first three shots. Right, Right, Carry. And #9 has teeth. Watch out.
But this is golfer paradise here. Please do everyone a favor, and keep it that way. Fill your divots, repair your ball marks. Visit by the busload and beg the county to lower the rates a little. Everyone deserves the chance to play Washington County.
Great practice facilities, excellent food costs and portions, smooth flowing pace of play. Pinch yourself all you want you ain't dreaming. If Kevin Costner strolls up to you and asks "is this heaven", just smile and say yes. Yes it is.
