Turning onto Lindsay Road, Hole #6 waves from your left. You'll think to yourself, Man, that's a lot of sand. Get used to that. A reasonably straight drive, 175-275 yards, is safe off most (non Par 3) tees. Was there even rough on this course? Can't remember. Seemed to be just sand, water, sand, water, fairways, fescue and some sand.
The approach shots here will eat you up. The bunkers and lakes are menacing guardians of each green. (Bring a 20 ft. ball retriever and you'll never have to buy golf balls again.) And the greens? Have you ever stood on the edge of a pool table and putted a ball to one of the pockets? Now imagine that pool table with ski run contours and slopes. Got it? Welcome to Troy Burne. You deserve a medal for a one putt here. Even from 3 feet. You better hope you have the right line. (Don't skip the practice green pre-round. It is an exact template of the on-course greens.)
And our advice for the Par 3s? Don't be short. Don't hit the green. And don't be long. Hope that helps! The signature holes out here are too many to count. 2,4,5,6 and 7 are great on the front. but the beauties, and beasts, await you on the back. Ten will kick you in the teeth right off the bat. Eleven is our "signature" pick (out of at least a dozen "signatures") and then #12 beats you senseless. (Our "Hardest Hole" Designee) You're still so shaken on the 13th tee, you'll be grateful for a triple but hang in there, you can catch your breath on fourteen. Then meet the craziest bunker in Wisconsin on #15. Try it out for fun. (Helmets recommended.) #17 is another beauty. It's quite literally one memorable experience after another here...
But with all the good there is some bad. The hole-to-hole signage is lacking and total absence of any basic and consistent yardage marking system is unforgivable. (Must have had GPS here at one point). Our only other points of contention with this course are the green fees and lack of catering to the needs of the forward tee people. It's hard to say a course this beautiful isn't worth $100 a round but it's not quite worth $100 a round. A novel concept for this course would be to charge $1 per bunker hit ... Never mind. Take our $100.
