From the back tees, the course is over 6600 yards; the 6281 yards from the whites are much more manageable. With a total of five tees for most holes, the course should accommodate most golfers. The course conditions were good overall. We found the tee boxes to be a little hard, but the fairways and greens were in very good shape. The rough was reasonably long and thick. There weren’t any multi-tiered greens; they were generally straightforward. We did repair several ball marks, but that’s more indicative of the other patrons’ poor etiquette, rather than any lapse in maintenance.
The front nine is relatively flat and a bit narrow in places, since many holes are lined with pine trees on both sides. The back nine is more contoured and generally a little wider, as well as more scenic. Golfers who are able to hit well will be rewarded, but bad shots will typically result in penalties. There are quite a few greenside bunkers, but they are in good shape, not overly deep and it’s not difficult to get out of them. Water comes into play on only five holes and there aren’t many areas that are out of bounds. In fact even if a few shots are errant, odds are you’ll find the ball. And pace-of-play was excellent.
Thumper’s staff is friendly and efficient. The beverage cart comes around frequently. The clubhouse offers a small snack bar where you can get a hot dog, chips or a drink at the turn. There’s also a full-service restaurant with reasonable prices. To be sure, Thumper is not a golf destination resort like those in Brainerd. But it is a very hacker-friendly course, so bring your clubs if you’re going to be in the area.
