Green Lake is just west of Fond du Lac. Lawsonia is in Green Lake. Lawsonia is the host of two incredible golf courses, the "Woodlands" and the "Links." The Links course turned 80 years old in 2010. It's course designer, William Langford, is in the Golf Hall of Fame. Lawsonia Links is considered his greatest work. For more than 50 years "The Links" was considered one of the greatest 50 courses in the country. In 2008 it was nominated as the Wisconsin Golf Course of the Year. (Yes, Whistling Straits is in Wisconsin too.) Currently it ranks on every Top 10 Wisconsin Golf Course list.

It's goes on and on. That's its history. That's what we knew going in. We had no reason to doubt what we'd heard. But we did. Come on... Links? Lawsonia? Green Lake? Do any of those words scream "I am amazing!" to you? Us either. What fools we were. Consider this our "Ode to Objectivity."

The Links course is every bit what you would imagine if you imagined a great course for everyone to play, forgiving enough for the average golfer and challenging enough for the scratch golfer. It's every bit of what you'd imagine if you imagined a course with phenomenal course conditions, incredible design, and outstanding service. It's everything you'd imagine and then it's better... because it's real.

We tried not to like it. We tried to find fault with the relaxing pace of play, the consistent greens, the excellent price and quantity of food in the "Caddyshack," the beautiful scenery, and the abundance of wildlife. We tried to keep the smile off our faces as we posed for a photo on the 1st green, braved the carpet-like fairways, imagined the boxcar buried under the 7th green, and explored the perfect sand in as many bunkers as we could. We're supposed to find fault with this? Seriously? Well, we failed miserably. Despite the course's challenge... despite the triple-bogeys... We discovered this is not the place for pessimists and skeptics. This is the place for believers. And believe you, me... we believe! We can't tell you that it's easy... but it sure is hard to beat.

Their website presents you with an unadulterated photo gallery of what you'll actually see there and offers reasonable Stay & Play packages as well. (Which you wouldn't need if you lived there.) Hey, there's an idea.

Great course and I feel bad that it's not in a better location for more play because everyone needs to play here at least a dozen times. My rating is low only because of the rangers....a bunch of retired jerks that think they own the course. They pushed us on a round the we completed in less then 4 hours but they had so many rangers they didn't know they were bothering us 5 times during our round. One guy actually told us to speed it up and we were finishing up on #17 with one more hole to play. There wasn't even a group behind us. I called the club house and still no action...I wrote a note and to the club house and still no reply. They need to shape up as I was ready to play the rest of the week but decided to play Rolling Meadows instead of giving them another penny. Good luck and watch out for the rangers....."out of control".

Glad to see this course scored well. Hope it gets photos soon too. Everyone needs to know how great this course is. If you already don't. Can't wait to return.
