South Hills has a down-to-earth, blue collar feel to it. It's not real fancy or flamboyant. The fairways are patchy in some areas, the greens do not have many contours, and the views from the tees are not what one might consider awe-inspiring. But what it lacks in drama, it more than makes up for in challenge and playability. The fairways offer generous landing areas and, unless you end up in one of the water hazards, you should not lose many balls. The rough and sand traps are easy to play out of. The challenge comes in the form of long par 3s and four par 5s in the span of five holes beginning with hole #8. But the even greater challenge in our estimation was #18, a 407 yard slightly uphill par 4. Even if you hit a good drive, you'll be left with a lengthy approach over a pond that fronts the green. This hole is not for the faint of heart. Consider a lay up 2nd shot and hope for a one putt par. At 6,332 yards and a slope of 124, South Hills will keep you on your toes from your first tee shot to your last putt.
South Hills hosts more than fifteen leagues, attesting to the popularity of the facility. The bar and restaurant areas are nicely appointed, and an outdoor snack shop is conveniently located behind the ninth green, making it a great place to grab a sandwich and beverage at the turn. The course is laid out with short distances between greens and tees; walking it would be fairly easy.
A family-managed operation, South Hills works hard to ensure that their customers enjoy themselves, both on and off the course. With competitive prices and a customer-oriented attitude, South Hills is a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon of golf.
