There's both good news and bad news about Shadowbrooke Golf Course. Luckily, the good outweighs the bad at this course in Lester Prairie, Minnesota. We happened to arrive before our tee time, so were able to start early.

The clubhouse made us a little nervous. It was a very, very old house. It seemed like someone was living there, since the women's restroom doubled as a laundry room. There was little merchandise (maybe a few hats) and a sign stated there would be no pro shop merchandise in 2009. There were, however, a few grandfather clocks for sale. The only food available was hot dogs. The clubhouse staff did tell us to plan ahead because there would be no beverage cart. Apparently, they usually do have a cart out, but four staff members were attending a funeral. The golf carts were very old and in poor condition. Many were dirty and some were wet.

In spite of all this, we had fun. The entire course was very scenic. The holes were unique and quite hacker-friendly. The fairways were in great condition and played nicely, as did the greens (some were spongy but good). There were distance markers at 200, 150 and 100 yards and pin placements were marked by red, white and blue flags.

There were many cart paths. They could use a few more arrows in certain spots, but we didn't get lost. The woods were thick enough to obscure other players and holes. (Mosquitoes could be a problem at some times.) Many other golfers chose to walk and there appeared to be nice shortcuts for them from green to next tee. We had to forgive the clubhouse and carts because the course was so beautiful. Many holes were very unique and even though they were challenging, there was room to keep the ball in play. The forward tees avoided much of the trouble. Shadowbrooke was very busy and the affordable twilight rates make it easy to see why. Overall, it was a very interesting and enjoyable experience.
