Entering the parking lot, you may find it difficult to locate the clubhouse. Watch yourself if you take the North path to the clubhouse... you cross directly in front of the 10th tee box! Take the safe path to the South, check in, crab your cart, and load up. (Should we carry a compass with us?) The on-course signage will keep you on your way from tee to green, green to tee. A map/hole layout of the course would have been greatly appreciated. But then, free beer would have been too.
The course has narrow fairways; however you can play your shots from just about any location, even the wrong fairway! The greens are unique in size, shape, and contours and offer many challenging but fair hole locations. Hole 7 is a fun Par 3, with water in front of the green and on the right. Hole 8 starts from an elevated tee with a slight left tee shot and you will be looking at being on the green in two. You just might not be on the green in two.
Hole 12 is only 282 yards... but don't be fooled. There is a small creek that runs between you and the green (depending on the time of year it may be dry) Lay up and play it safe.
The course staff was very friendly and the bar/restaurant had many people coming in just for the food and drink. If you are planning on golfing before 10am and would like a beverage or two for the round stop at the bar first, as cart service does not start until 10am.
The change in ownership in 2008 has been a great blessing to this course. They have upgraded the bar and restaurant and cleaned up the course to make it more playable. All of the improvements make Rivermoor a course to put back on the radar!
If you're looking for a walkable course that offers forgiveness for bad tee shots, fun yet challenging greens, and is a joy to play add Rivermoor to your list of courses.
