If you are looking for golf on the westside of the Twin Cities, Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain, Minnesota, can be approached on County Road 6 from either direction and you will see the clubhouse on the north side of the road. At the time of this writing we found the area a little dusty as there was new construction going on across the road from the clubhouse so roll up your windows.

This is a typical farm-country golf course with a nice layout. The tee boxes, rough and greens were in good shape but the fairways were hard and dry. There is a nice mixture of hazards (woods, water, sand and swamp) but only two holes really challenge accuracy. The greens are relatively small and the cups all seem to be elevated, making putts a challenge. There is little in the way of signage but the asphalt cart paths take the golfer from one hole to the next without the need for signs. There is not a level fairway on the course and the golf course's rolling contours makes for a good workout for the walker.

The course has many on-course Satellite toilets so a pit stop is just a few holes away. One sour note was the cleanliness and condition of the golf carts. Most carts could use a cleaning and the one we drove emitted a piercing whine from the rear axle that gave us a headache by the end of the round.

The log cabin clubhouse is pretty bare bones but was clean and the staff cordial and helpful. It offers the traditional golf course grub (snack bar) and a decent collection of gear and clothing. No great deals but some nice looking stuff. Fees for golf, driving range and carts are typical of this type of country course so you should be able to find a rate that will fit your budget.

There are enough challenges to make the course interesting but the wide fairways should keep you out of trouble most of the time with an opportunity for par on most holes and a birdie shot every now and then. For a little refreshment after the game, try the Ox Yoke Inn in Lyndale just a couple blocks east of Copeland on 92 heading towards St. Boni.

Nice course with a country feel only 25 mins from downtown Minneapolis. The 5 tee options make it playable for players with a wide range of skill levels.

The layout is nice. The holes don't run so close that my shanked ball end up in the next fairway. The greens were good and overall condition of the course nice for this time of year.

Nice senior discount weekdays and after 2 on weekends. Also twighlight rate is a good deal. Overall value was very good.
