Water comes into play on only four holes and there are a limited number of sand bunkers to challenge the golfer. The rough bordering the fairways is pretty much the same length as the fairways themselves... we actually had a hard time distinguishing between the two. The result is a slope of 113 from the White tees, which is indicative of the lack of hazards. Hackers should be able to score well here.
The par 3s are all tucked into wooded areas, which provides a nice backdrop. Practice opportunities are limited to a putting green only; a driving range is available across the street but is not affiliated with the golf course.
The most challenging hole is #4, a 421 yard par four that requires a tee shot of about 190 yards to carry a pond in front of the tee. The day we played we had a steady 20 mph wind directly into our face, which caused us to play around the pond instead of over it. A bogey 5 felt like a par to us.
The clubhouse and bar facilities are somewhat outdated, but the course staff members were friendly and accommodating. Discounts are available, as Paganica honors other courses' coupons. Food was available at reasonable rates and the bar had a wide selection of beverages.
The grounds and buildings at Paganica could use some sprucing up, and the grass in the fairways was thin and patchy in many areas. But on the plus side, the greens were in decent shape - if a little slow - and the sand traps were well-maintained and easy to hit out of. The layout of the holes is good and lends itself well to walking. And just minutes north of Interstate 94, it's easy to get to.
There are a number of golf courses in the area, most of which will cost you more to play. So if you're looking for an inexpensive day of golf, Paganica would be a good choice.
