The course originally opened with a nine-hole executive course, but in 2008 an 18-hole championship course was added. The championship course is built alongside the nine-hole "33 Course," the latter of which has special junior tees to accommodate kids or for those just learning the game. Along with the new golf course came a new building for the pro shop and banquet space, plus some redoing of the cart paths. The new building is quite impressive, as is the course itself. The fairways are first-rate, with five tee boxes per hole and cart paths over most of the course.
The fairways follow the natural contours of the land (which makes them quite hilly) and are surrounded by forest. Water comes into play on ten of the holes, and there are eight dogleg fairways. Hole #1 is a par-5 dogleg with water on both sides of the fairway. Hole #5 has a right-angle dogleg with water and marsh at the turn and woods all around. Number 12 is also a right angle, where the player has to gamble on getting over a marsh or shoot around a large tree in the middle of the fairway.
All four of the par-3 holes are long and over water and marsh, with woods surrounding the green. In fact, hole 15 has a large pine tree centered directly in front of the green!
The course is 7230 yards and is attempting to appeal to the championship level of golfer. However, five tee boxes allow any hacker to enjoy playing the course! Minnesota National is certainly a first-class course! It is probably not walkable because the land is quite hilly and there are some long distances between holes. Playing here is a very enjoyable experience. The scenery is great and the golf is good!
