Although the course is very scenic, and the clubhouse is quite lovely, the practice facilities are minimal. Fortunately a much-needed driving range opens in 2011.
This challenging golf course winds its way back and forth through hills and mature trees. Water, though present, doesn't come into play very often, and lateral hazards are clearly marked. Tee boxes have sand and seed and containers for broken tees. While the course has many attractive and unique holes, the journey from the 4th through the 8th is probably the most interesting stretch.
The 4th hole is the shortest of KMCC'S Par 3's and the prettiest, adorned with a little pond sitting on the left and a nicely groomed greenside bunker. The Par 5 5th starts out with a tee shot over a grassy waste area to a narrow, tree-lined dogleg left. The second shot is totally blind, requiring you to hit your ball down into a ravine at a second, very sharp dogleg left. Hit it long or short, and you have no easy way to reach the green. Even from the bottom of this valley, with no trees blocking your approach, you have another blind shot to reach the tiny, sloped, elevated green that's fronted by a small but deadly bunker. From tee to green this beautiful hole is just crazy-hard for most hackers. Tame in comparison, holes 6 thru 8 provide more beautiful and intriguing shot opportunities and settings.
The many blind shots make KMCC a challenge for high handicap golfers, and the lack of proper signage doubles your trouble. You frequently have no idea how far it is to unseen doglegs or to which side of the fairway you're supposed to hit the ball. In addition, the strange layout makes it confusing when trying to find some of the holes.
KKMC has a full restaurant menu in the country club-caliber clubhouse and good beer on tap. Their blue cheese burger with bacon and a thick fried onion ring on top is to die for.
