The friendly and informative staff checked us in at the fully stocked pro shop. After hitting a bucket at the range and slapping a few around the putting green, we headed to the first tee where we realized we couldn't see the flag. It was fortunate for our group that we had printed off the "Pro Tips" from the course website. As first timers to the course, we found these tips very valuable throughout the round.
The course was in great shape for Spring. The tee boxes were clean and maintained. The fairways were defined and well groomed. The bunkers were freshly raked and had soft sand in them. We were particularly impressed with the greens, which were challenging but fair. They were very well manicured and the ball rolled true. There are plenty of twists and turns on them, but if you put your approach in the right spot, birdies are possible.
The course measures 6,129 yards from the middle of 3 sets of tees. Not lengthy but with challenges. #5, a 336 yard par 4, is a true risk/reward test and the course's number 1 handicap hole. #7, the course's "signature" hole, is a 168 yard par 3 that is all carry over a valley to a sloping green. Our "local" playing partner suggested: "Take an extra club. It always plays long."
There is a friendly and relaxed vibe throughout Kettle Moraine Golf Club. The beverage cart made frequent stops during our round, there was always a restroom when we needed one. Trash cans and ball washers were at every tee. After your round don't miss the Scorecard Lounge. A burger and dog menu backed up by a full bar, with plenty of tables and a big screen TV, makes it a great place to relax and relive (or be relieved from) your round.
Kettle Moraine Golf Club made us feel like we were on vacation. The natural beauty, the friendly staff, and the soothing atmosphere, made us feel like we were "up north" instead of just a short drive from Milwaukee.
