Hole #5 is a dogleg right par 4 with a pond on the right and a creek running in front of the green. If that isn't enough, a large ash tree blocks your approach to the right side of the green. Talk about a challenging hole! You might want to play this as a three-shot hole, laying up short of the creek with your 2nd shot and then hope to get down with one putt. As the toughest hole on the course, it had us shaking our heads as we walked off the green, but it's one we won't soon forget. Holes 9 and 18 are also entertaining: 9 features an island green and 18 is a great finishing hole guarded by a pond in front of the green.
We found the tees, fairways, sand traps and greens to be in exceptional shape. With little elevation change, it would be an easy course to walk. We were able to order food on the 9th tee and it was ready & waiting for us at the turn. Several sandwiches, burgers and wraps were offered. The variety and quality made for a great mid-round meal.
After our round we had a couple beverages on the deck attached to the restaurant overlooking the 1st, 9th and 18th holes. This is a great spot to relax and watch other golfers completing their rounds. The pro shop was spacious and offered a great selection of equipment and apparel. Course staff members were attentive and accommodating, and were genuinely intent on making our visit enjoyable.
The manager refers to Idlewild as "Door County Golf At It's Finest." Granted, Door County has several quality golf facilities, but being only a half hour from Green Bay, Idlewild is a closer alternative for golfers driving up to the area and a course you'll enjoy playing often.
