These canyons alone can be intimidating to hit a golf ball through but add in bent-grass fairways and "links-style" rough for a little more complexity. Don't forget the dozens and dozens of strategically placed bunkers. Oh, and add in some ponds and a ragging river. It doesn't matter how good of golfer you are, you will have an amazing experience like none other in Iowa or in the Midwest.
Honey Creek is a fairly new course built in the early 2000s. The front nine was constructed first and is pretty straight forward. With lots of prairie grass and sand it is still challenging but most holes are playable for a Hacker.
The back nine, which would compete with any back nine as the hardest 9 holes in Iowa, was added in 2008 along a river. Though, the back nine is still maturing it makes you feel like you're at Amen Corner in Augusta just trying to get through it without blowing up or loosing a million golf balls. One golfer called this back nine "shrewd. The back nine can literally wear you out." Number 11, the first of many signature holes on the back, starts the madness. This hole is 180-200 par-three that is literally straight down a cliff. The green looks like a postage stamp from atop the canyon. After hitting the ball to this green it feels like the ball is in the air for hours before hitting something.
The craziness continues at 12, 13 and 14. Never will a golfer have an easy lie or stance hitting the ball on these holes. Deciding to grab a driver or any other wood on 14 is a huge mistake. This signature hole is one of the tightest 90 degree doglegs on the course.
Precision and placement is key when playing Honey Creek. There is no room for error and little to no forgiveness anywhere on the course.
The owners of Honey Creek will eventually improve the clubhouse and develop this course into one of the top courses in the state. The staff warns you of the fun you're about to have but also consoles you when you look exhausted from the back nine!
