While the driving range is short due to the topographical layout of the course, the other quality elements of the course more than make up for it. The diligence of the course management and ownership is quite apparent. The owners take pride in hand building their own bridges. These are no "ordinary" bridges, conveying instead the eclectic look of historic New England.
While the course's beauty is captivating, one must maintain their concentration as dangerous holes such as Hole #2 can throw off your entire game. However, play the safe, straight shot to center as opposed to going for the long bomb, as any deviation will land you in sand trap and pond that exist on each side of the humbling fairway.
You may want to allocate extra time when teeing off, to stop at Holes #4 and #5 whose unique array of visuals draw the awe of any visitor with an old red barn, water wheel, dock and even a life guard chair to jokingly torment the water-bound golfer. It is no surprise that Hole #14 is considered one of the course's signature holes. It appears non-threatening however its pristine pond creates a large dangerous hazard that is hidden from the tee box so don't let your slice or hook deviate to the right or the pristine nature of the pond may be interrupted by the sudden splash of your current favorite ball being engulfed.
The 19th Hole has a lot to offer in terms of design, cuisine, and outdoor seating on its huge deck with a covered roof. Its split level restaurant connects to the bar which rolls out to the covered deck. The covered deck protects patrons from the sun's hostility while allowing them to enjoy the lush foliage and wooded scenery.
Ultimately, Hilly Haven incorporates an excellent blend of varying topography, trees, water appeal, charm and challenge to make this golf destination a worthy stop for any soul.
