Eagle's Landing Golf Club in Fort Ripley, Minnesota, is a great surprise. It's safe to say that we were wowed by it! The clubhouse and staff of this golf course in the Brainerd/Cross Lake area are extremely friendly and helpful.

It was only 46 degrees late in the season when we started, but the course was quite busy for a late-season weekday, but it played at a nice pace. The pro shop has nice merchandise, most of which was on sale due to the late season. Cart paths, tee boxes and signs are all top-notch and well kept up. Since we played on a fall day and there were leaves everywhere, it wasn't always easy to find your ball-but hitting in the fairway would help in the first place! Fairways are nicely mowed and easy to see. Bunkers are everywhere but they don't seem to be a problem. The very few water hazards didn't come into play, either.

Overall, it seems to be a very forgiving course. Flags mark the pin placements, but we didn't see any other markings other than the 200, 150 and 100. There are four tee boxes, with the forward tees being especially forward and very friendly. The greens are huge (maybe double the size of other greens) and undulating with many hills, valleys, curves, and they are in good shape. Because of the size of the greens, we had some very long and curvy putts that were challenging but still fun.

A couple of the greens have downslopes so the balls just keep on rolling. Yet other times a too-short putt might come right back to you! The restaurant was closed for the season when we were there, but they had some hot snacks, beer and a very comfortable bar area. The in-season menu looks reasonable and varied. There is also a big patio area, but it was too cold to try it out.
