The course, which was built in 1927 and renovated in 1996, plays just 5,900 yards from the white tees, but Dodge Riverside's PGA Professional said the course plays a lot longer than it seems. "Don't get greedy," he said. "The rough's not long, but it's thick so play smart and keep it in the short stuff." There are several frustrating areas of knee high fescue on the course, sure to gobble up wayward drives. However, the marshals on the course were extremely friendly and helped look for some balls.
If you want to hit some balls before your round, get there early. The small driving range is located out in the middle of the course and requires a cart ride out there. If you bring kids along, there's a nice little par-3 course across the street (Westwood) or a great bike and running trail that runs along the course. The spectacular Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge is just a half-mile to the north.
The 14 par 4s on the course provide unique challenges. At least half of them require a carry over trees or a shot worked around them. The signature hole on the front, number 8, is especially difficult. Hitting a driver requires a tee shot over high trees, bringing out of bounds into play. Leave the driver in the bag, because you'll need to be in a good position to hit the green in order to make par on this very undulated green.
The signature hole on the back, number 13, plays just 280 yards from the white tees. However, unless you can carry your driver 270 over the pond, hit a long iron off the tee and favor the left side of the fairway to avoid being blocked by overhanging trees on the right.
Overall the course is in great shape and plays very fair if you can keep the ball in the fairway. There are two short par 5s on the back 9 that can really help your score if you play them right. There are several challenging greens, but they are not too fast for the average golfer.
