The course is a traditional parkland design with heavily wooded areas and water hazards that make the easiest doglegs look difficult. Each fairway has a birdhouse that serves as the 150 yard marker. Distance markers are prevalent across the entire golf course so that the player knows the yardages without worrying about GPS coordinates.
The course is very walkable playing at 6,167 yards from the back (blue) tees. Although there are cart paths available, they are limited. The existing paths could use some upgrading such as adding more sand and gravel. Overall signage directing golfers from green to tee could be better but is adequate. Carts are plentiful and are suggested if one is in a hurry to get a quick 18 holes in before dark. There are several different leagues that play the golf course weekly so when making a tee time, check the league schedule.
There is a driving range and putting green near the clubhouse to get in that extra needed practice. The clubhouse has a bar and grill to get a snack, burger, beer, soda or other drinks before, after or during the round. The pro shop is adequately stocked with the essentials such as balls, tees, markers, etc. Clothing is also available at reasonable prices. Customer service is excellent in the bar/grill and pro shop. Being that the course is family owned and operated, golfers are treated in a respectful manner as the owners want to make sure that each golfer has a rewarding golf experience at Castle Rock.
The greens have a variety of shapes, and are well maintained. The speed of the greens certainly isn't of the U.S. Open variety but a course like this shouldn't be that difficult to play. A little improvement could be made to the tee boxes but with the amount of play and recent weather conditions, this is understandable.
Certain holes such as #13 offer a northwestern Wisconsin "woodsy" look and makes one feel that they are in a special place.
Consider Castle Rock when in or around the Wisconsin Dells. Unless you don't golf. Then go fly a kite instead.
