2012 REVIEW
Enjoy a stroll in the woods?  Grab your clubs and head South on Hwy. 61 to Bellwood Oaks south of Hastings, Minnesota. Watch for the next intersection south of 180th Street, turn left, and follow the road to the end of the pavement.  You’ll be greeted in the modest clubhouse by the friendly and welcoming staff. Plan to arrive a little early, test your stroke on the practice green or, if you need a warm-up, stop over at the 8-station driving range along the road. You can make your reservation online up to 8 days prior.

When you’re ready, take your group to the first hole, decide on one of the four tee boxes, and enjoy a course with plenty of fairway landing space running through groves of mature, stately oak trees.  Not that you won’t be able to find trouble on a course with sixteen fairway bunkers and another eighteen guarding the greens.  In addition, you’ll also have to avoid the water hazards along holes # 3, 10 and 14.  And did we mention the oaks, those tall solid bastions that just dare you to try and force your slightly off-center drive over, around the edge, or through their strong, waiting arms. Just remember what your Mom cautioned… stay on the straight and narrow, don’t try to cut corners to get ahead, and you’ll be both successful and want to return over and over again, perhaps playing from an even more challenging distance next time.

For some reason, we especially enjoyed #11, a very pretty hole with a sharp dogleg right about 235 yards from the tee, leading to an unguarded green. If only we had made better use of the left side of the fairway, and been able to skirt the thick trees along the right.  Well, maybe next time.

Check the website for more information on the course layout, directions, rates, packages and special offers, tee time booking, league and membership information, newsletters, and a photo galley featuring each hole on the course.   If you’re in the market for professional assistance with your game, LPGA pro Letitia Ziler can assist with individual or group instruction, lesson plans, and club fitting. Newbies may want to investigate the ‘Learn to Golf’ program.

Knock wood, or not - we know you’ll enjoy Bellwood Oaks!

2010 REVIEW
Bellwood Oaks Golf Club is located about five minutes south of Hastings, Minnesota, just off Highway 61. We golfed on a Monday morning and there were 10 to 12 golfers at the first tee. We were on time and had no wait at the first hole. There is a practice green and an 8-station driving range on site. Check-in is in a small building close to the first tee.

If you are hungry, or think you are going to be, better make sure you get something before you get here. There is a very limited amount of snacks and microwave sandwiches available. A few tables in the check-in building is the extent of the clubhouse amenities.

We really liked this course. It was a “no frills” experience other than the golf, but the round itself was very enjoyable. We found the course to be exceedingly well kept, and very hacker friendly. There is not an abundance of flora and fauna, but the holes are nevertheless very nice and give you a peaceful feeling. The rough was a bit on the long side, but not overly so. Greens were large, and flat for the most part; some gradual slopes here and there make them challenging on only a few holes. The greens were in excellent condition and the flags on this particular day were very fairly placed. The thing we liked most about this course was the fact that all holes were very reachable in regulation. If you drive an average distance and keep the ball in the fairway, you will have an excellent chance to reach the green and score well. If you do have the cursed slice or hook on your drives, don’t worry, the course is open enough that you still have a chance to recover and score. There are 34 groomed bunkers on the course, and 3 holes have water, but all were fairly placed and the water was flagged with a striped pole to let you know it was there. Out-of-bounds markers come into play on only a few holes, and you really are out-of-bounds when you cross them.

Again, the best part of the day was the golf, just like it should be. Great course, in great condition, and very hacker friendly. This is a course we will surely visit again.

Quite small clubhouse with limited food variety and not much more than balls and gloves for sale.

Golf course is in very good shape. Wide fairways and large relatively flat greens. The greens were very firm. Shots hit on greendidn't hold very well, in fact youcould land short of green and roll of the back. Best shot was a very high shot, which would hold somewhat.

Good variety of holes. Fun course to play.
